Thai held for not standing at anthem
AFP

BANGKOK — A Thai man who refused to stand up when the royal anthem was played in a cinema has been charged with lese majeste — offending the dignity of the monarch, police said Wednesday.

Chotisak Onsoong, 27, on Sept. 19 last year failed to get to his feet when the anthem was played before the film started, as is customary in Thailand, where King Bhumibol Adulyadej is widely revered.

why wear military?

Trench coat… I really wanted one, simply because of pictures like this:

BUT what if I have SO SHORT winter this year?! My real winter was the two weeks spent in Japan in January. After that, back to almost-always-warm Southeast Asia. Read the rest of this entry »

as long as my life

Fly! (Thailand, Apr 2008 )

Today is such a nice day. Nice breeze, not too much sun. It’s a bit funny (or interesting) to think that in Japanese “good weather (ii tenki)” literally means sunny. I cannot say “ii tenki” for a weather like this. Maybe because all Japanese-speaking people supposed to think “good weather” is sunny? It’s weird, just like no matter how hot in May, Japanese students cannot wear uniforms with short sleeves.

I am having a bit of summer vacation now. For a while, no particular work (in other words, I am jobless). I read, write, draw, photograph, walk, go out, chat, study, cook, clean, take shower, sleep. As I have rested pretty much, I started to think again what I am to do in my life.

What am I to do? Read the rest of this entry »

“aid”?

Long and winding road!Long and winding road! (Thailand, Sept 2007)

I got a call from a Korean guy, who used to be one of my co-workers. He wanted to know the contact numbers of some staff, to send English books to establish a library in a Burmese refugee camp in Thailand.

I tried to be polite listening to his story… He already got fund from UN people and NGOs in his country. And I simply wondered if he really knows about aid, human rights and development. Read the rest of this entry »

Why marriage?

Sawasdee! (Koh Samet, Mar 2008 )Sawasdee! (Koh Samet, Mar 2008 )

Many of my friends have been married. Many will marry pretty soon. And I wonder, why marriage anyway?

A couple of a man and a woman probably is the oldest form of community in the animal history, including humans. With or without any official authorisation, many choose to stay together with certain commitment. My parents are not a perfect couple, and yet they have stayed together for more than 25 years. Why? Is it that good? Read the rest of this entry »

Songkran

日本語はこちら

Today is the last day of Songkran, the Thai New Year festival. It falls on the hottest time of the year, and it is true!! So no wonder why people start to wet others by throwing water.

I thought it’s something completely wild, like sometimes young people are in Italy in summer: throwing water to each other, running around, lots of laughter, being wild. But it is not so. Of course in places like Kaosan Road in Bangkok it is:

Italian food?

Impossibly big calzone... (Bangkok, Feb 2008)Impossibly big calzone… (Bangkok, Feb 2008 )

The picture is “calzone” in Basilico resutaurant in Bangkok. The restaurant is known to be one of the best Italian restaurants in the city.

When I saw this, I got shocked. In Italy, you would never see something like this… The real calzone, lookes pretty much the same, BUT a lot smaller. Maybe as big as your palm, not more.

Japan has developed so-called “Sushi Police” (The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, “Recommendation of Japanese Restaurants Outside Japan). Maybe Italy also gotta have one?

Calzone in Thailandia

Calzone in ThailandiaGigante… Calzone in Thailandia (Bangkok, febbraio 2008 )

English edition of this post available here

Read the rest of this entry »

Facebook… not yet

(Bangkok, Apr 2008) I'd rather see the person's face...(Bangkok, Apr 2008 ) I’d rather see the person’s face…

Facebook. Another friend suggested me to join it last Friday. This is the fourth time someone tells me to.

The second time I was suggested to I visited the website, almost signed in. Then I did not, I guess I was caught up with other stuff and just closed the page. I guess I did the right thing, as now I see that “You can’t delete anything” and “Anyone can glance at your intimate confessions” at Facebook (The Guardian), besides all the issues of privacy (privacy.org).
